Chroma Nomad is about exploration and making connections. It is a passion project intersecting my curiosities of language and identity along with my real experiences living with synesthesia.
Synesthesia is a neurological trait that allows a person’s senses to blend together in unique ways. In my life, I experience synesthesia through colors. Everything I hear, smell, taste, etc., is simultaneously and instantaneously experienced as an array of colors in my mind. One of my strongest senses is chromesthesia — interpreting sound as colors. Over the years, I have painted the colors I see when people talk. I call these “voice paintings.” I paint wherever I travel, wherever I have lived in the world, and the people who have guided me along the way. I have painted from young children to elderly people…those whose first language is English and those who did not speak any English, but welcomed this experience in their native language.
This website will serve as a catalogue showcasing memorable experiences in painting voices, linguistic connections, and will explore synesthesia in different ways. Painting voices and sharing my world of synesthesia has been a worthwhile experience. It has allowed me to connect with others beyond spoken word and I am excited to start charting this journey for others to see.
